The Renaissance organ of the parish of Santa María in Garrovillas de Alconétar (Cáceres, Spain) is considered to be one of the most significant musical instruments in the region and a key element of Extremadura’s cultural heritage. Experts believe it to be one of the oldest music instruments in Europe and undoubtedly the oldest functioning Renaissance church organ in the Iberian peninsula. Its history, singularity and unique features are widely documented. The earliest written testimony is a document dated from 1578 which records the payment of 6,000 maravedies (the currency in Spain at that time) to the organist for his services.
The organ was restored in 1987 by the Dutch organ expert Gerard De Graf and is currently in a perfect state of conservation.

The Asociación Domingo Marcos Durán has the responsibility of maintaining the organ in good health and promoting its existence among the wider public. The association takes its name from the composer of “Lux Bella”, the first musical treatise in Spanish which was composed in 1492 by the artist of the same name. Domingo Marcos Durán (born in Garrovillas) is also known for composing “Comento sobre Lux Bella” (1497) and “Súmula de canto de órgano, contrapunto y composición” (c. 1502).
